The Straffe Hendrik was originally brewed by De Halve Maan brewery in Bruges. At the request of the then mayor, Henri Maes and his daughter Véronique brewed a slightly stronger blond beer in 1981 for the inauguration of the statue of Saint Arnold, the patron saint of brewers.
