Amarone della Valpolicella is an Italian red wine with the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita quality label—abbreviated DOCG. It is produced exclusively in the Valpolicella region in the province of Verona.
Amarone della Valpolicella is among Italy's most powerful wines. The best examples can be aged for many years. Amarone wines are made entirely from late-harvested, dried grapes. The drying process takes place on straw mats—either outdoors or in an attic—and takes several months. The wine is then fully fermented, and the extra sugar content of the dried grapes results in a very rich wine. It is aged in oak for three years. There are many styles of Amarone wines. Each producer gives their Amarone their own distinctive signature. This wine is elegantly fruit-based and possesses a beautifully refined flavor and depth.
